Data and Research
The Office of Teacher and Leader Development’s Research Unit supports ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú's vision for a sustainable educator pipeline through research, data collection, analysis, reporting, and evidence-based insights. Our work spans the educator pipeline—from preparation and entry into the profession to workforce conditions, professional growth, and retention—and is aimed at understanding New York State's evolving educator workforce needs.
Through statewide surveys, educator evaluation data, research initiatives, and the development of interactive data dashboards, the Research Unit strives to illuminate the educator pipeline and the broader educator landscape. This work provides timely information to support policy development, strengthen educator preparation, identify workforce needs, and inform strategies to recruit, develop, and retain teachers and leaders across New York State.
Understanding New York's Educator Pipeline
A strong educator workforce begins with a strong pipeline. Our research and data help examine the pathways into the profession and the extent to which educator preparation programs are meeting the needs of New York's schools and communities.
Exploring the relationship between educator preparation and workforce needs provides insight into educator preparation programs, the flow of candidates into the profession, and the extent to which the supply of newly prepared educators aligns with workforce demand.
By examining the educator pipeline, we can better understand where educators are being prepared, where workforce needs exist, and how the state's educator preparation system can support the future needs of local education agencies in New York's State.
Data Collection
The Research Unit conducts and supports research that examines the experiences, needs, and conditions of New York's educators and education workforce. Our statewide surveys provide information that helps ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú better understand recruitment, hiring, retention, mobility, and educators' experiences in the profession.
Educator Evaluation Data
The Research Unit manages the collection of educator evaluation data, supporting ÌÇÐÄlogoÈë¿Ú's efforts to understand educator effectiveness and professional growth across the state. These data contribute to a broader evidence base for understanding the educator workforce and informing research, policy, and professional learning.
Educator Exit Survey
The Educator Exit Survey gathers information from educators who are leaving their positions, providing insight into their experiences and reasons for departure. Findings help inform efforts to better understand educator mobility and strengthen retention strategies.
Educator Vacancy and Hiring Survey
The Educator Vacancy and Hiring Survey provides information about educator vacancies and hiring across New York State. The data help identify workforce needs and illuminate challenges related to recruiting and filling educator positions.
Federal Reporting
The Research Unit supports New York State's federal reporting requirements related to the educator workforce and educator preparation. Through the collection, analysis, and reporting of statewide data, the Research Unit provides information that helps meet federal Title II and Teacher Shortage reporting requirements and contributes to a broader understanding of educator preparation and workforce needs.
